A Lucky Year for In the Soil

By on 0

Music, media, theatre, dance and poetry are on the list this year for the 7th Annual In the Soil Arts Festival. The event is expected to bring in 500 artists from right within the Niagara Region, to as far as Halifax. The festival will be running from April 24 – 26 on James St. in St. Catharines, between St. Paul Street and King Street.

While there will be many artists over the three day event, too many to list, the big Friday headliner will be The Wilderness of Manitoba and Saturday’s headliner will be the sensational Radio Radio. You can check out the full schedule here.

The Wilderness of Manitoba are a Canadian indie folk band, self described as an evolving entity. The band’s newest album, Between Colours, is as far-reaching as anything in its catalogue. They feel that it speaks to what an album means to them: that it’s between the one previous and the next one along, and that each album is its own colour. “When a band isn’t changing, it’s not growing,” says guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist Will Whitwham. From the band’s inception, it has redefined itself with every album; from Hymns of Love and Spirits through When You Left The Fire, Island of Echoes and The Leslieville Sessions. The evolution of their sound has run the gamut from four part harmonies and chamber folk to their current more cinematic arrangements.

Since their first releases Télé Télé EP (2007) and Cliché Hot (2008), Gabriel Louis Bernard Malenfant (NB) and Jacques Alphonse Doucet (NS) have impressed journalists and the public alike with their catchy hip-hop/electro-flavored hooks. With their second album Belmundo Regal, short-listed for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize, the Acadian duo won many awards, such as an Independent Music Award for Rap/Hip Hop Album (2011), a Miroir for Best Hip-Hop/Urban Performance at the Festival d’été de Québec, and a Révélation Musique 2010-2011 Radio-Canada title, as well as a Félix for Hip-Hop Album of the Year for their third full-length, Havre de Grâce (2012).

This year will also see a new lead partner, PenFinancial Credit Union, aligning with the event.

“Our partnership with In the Soil Arts Festival is a perfect fit,” says Jody Vizza, Director of Brand, “Nurturing the arts community and helping to grow an appreciation for and celebrate the work of performing, literary, musicians and media artists is critical to building strong and vibrant Niagara communities.”

In the Soil may be in it’s lucky 7th year, but with a festival this exciting and with so many artists, luck isn’t even needed.
