The Niagara Peninsula is renowned for its rolling landscape, picturesque views of Mother Nature’s wonder and penchant for all things tourism related. It is with all of the above in mind that we bring you our top five Niagara cycling destinations.
Welland Canals Parkway
This destination is particularly cyclist-friendly as it is a three meter wide path for recreational use of all kinds. Located on the Welland Canal, this path promises beautiful views, cool breezes and plenty of opportunity to catch the massive ships making their way through the Great Lakes. This path is 42 km long, but you can trim your cycling down by parking at one of the many great stops along the way. If you start at Lock 1 you’ll have to resist the temptation to pedal over to wine country!
Short Hills Provincial Park
Just outside of St. Catharines, the Short Hills Provincial Park is a mountain biker’s playground with multi-use trails also open to cyclists. Challenge yourself with steep uphill climbs or take a relaxing cruise through the more picturesque paths that offer beautiful scenery and an even ride.
Upper Canada Heritage Trail
In Niagara and looking for some outdoor adventure? Don’t pass up the opportunity to take in the Niagara Escarpment. The Upper Canada Heritage Trail is mountain bike terrain with fourteen kms of gravel path that runs on the converted rail line. This pathway passes through farms, orchards, wineries and even the old town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Steve Bauer Trail
Connecting Welland and Fonthill, the Steve Bauer Trail is an excellent cycling path for the day-tripper. This trail is just eight km and takes you right into town on either end. Grab a bite to eat, take in the sights or do a triumphant 180 and ride all the way back. The Steve Bauer Trail is a must-ride for the lover of Niagara.
Gord Harry Trail
This is a trail for the outdoorsman, with a clear path through beautiful wooded landscapes. The Gord Harry Trail is named after the former Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority Chair and former Mayor of Wainfleet. The trail runs parallel to Lake Erie and takes riders through the Wainfleet Wetlands, Long Beach, Morgan’s Point and the Wainfleet Bog Conservation Area.
