Life is all about timing – and there’s no better time to enjoy the beauty of the Niagara region than winter. Not only will you not be battling the crowds who flock to the region from spring through fall, but you’ll also be treated to a spectacular display of Nature’s crystal creations.
When temperatures drop, the mist from Niagara Falls turns to ice, coating everything from railings to trees. Although the sidewalks are slippery, the scenery is incredible – particularly at night, when the Falls and everything around them is illuminated by an extravaganza of coloured lights.
Stand and gaze, or lace up a pair of skates and whirl around on the Rink at the Brink – arguably, the most scenic skating rink in the world. Don’t have skates? No worries! They have rentals on hand.
If skating isn’t your thing, perhaps tobogganing is! And Niagara is filled with great hills that, after a fresh dusting of snow, draw thrill-seekers of all ages. Bring a sled, a saucer or just slide down on your backside – it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the best winter has to offer. A favourite spot for sliders of all sorts is the broad open hill just beside the Seaway Authority buildings in Thorold. No admission and endless fun!
