Bruce Trail Hike-A-Thon

By on 0

Niagara is well known for it’s spectacular wines, bountiful produce and especially, it’s beautiful nature scenes. One of the most popular scenes is the Bruce trail, Canada’s longest and oldest marked footpath, spanning 890 km along the Escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory. This is only the main path, as there is another 400 km of associated side trails!

To help support the Bruce Trail Conservancy’s 50th Anniversary Milestone Project, the Bruce Trail Club is inviting you to participate in the first ever Bruce Trail Hike-a-thon. Registration starts June 1st and the hike-a-thon takes place for the whole moth of August. The goal of the hike-a-thon is to help preserve and protect the Bruce Trail and give you the opportunity to make your kilometres count towards a worthy cause. You can traverse the paths by yourself, enjoying the beauty and quiet contemplation, or if you are a social butterfly, join one of the public hikes offered by the Bruce Trail clubs.

The Niagara section of the Bruce trail begins at a stone cairn in Queenston Heights and ends in Grimsby, at a little bridge crossing the 40 Mile Creek. Through St. Catharines and Thorold, hikers will pass all 4 of the Welland Canals and can view many different ships from all over the world. You will also travel through a woodland belt and across farmland, finally leading along the shores of Lake Iroquois.

Another feature of the Bruce Trail are the many waterfalls along the route. Niagara Falls is definitely the most popular of the bunch, but another beautiful waterfall that shouldn’t be missed is Decew Falls. If you’re more of a zoologist, there are 36 species of reptiles and amphibians, 53 species of mammals, 90 species of fish and over 350 species of birds. Truly incredible.

Participants are asked to raise a minimum donation of $100 for individuals and $300 for teams. You’ll even get a web link that you can send to friends and family to help support your efforts! The Hike-a-thon will take place in August with a kick-off event on August 2nd featuring hikes, music and giveaways.
